Check a lease quote

The dealer worksheet in, a verdict out: how far off MSRP the price really is, whether the money factor looks marked up against what others signed for, what the cash down is doing, and what each finding is worth over the term.

What the grade means

What makes a lease quote good?
Three things you can check: a real discount off MSRP, a money factor at the lender's buy rate rather than marked up, and a true monthly cost — everything paid divided by the term — at or under 1% of MSRP. Residuals are set by the lender and are not negotiable, so a quote is mostly won or lost on price and rate.
How do I know if the money factor is marked up?
You need the captive lender's base rate for your credit tier, which is not published. This site uses signed deals other people have shared for the same make and term as a reference. Dealers may mark the rate up by 50 to 100 basis points of APR, which is legal, ordinary, and negotiable.
Should I put money down on a lease?
Usually not. A down payment lowers the monthly payment but not the cost, and it is not refunded if the car is totalled or stolen early in the term. Where the lender accepts multiple security deposits, those buy down the rate and are returned at lease end.
