How it works
A handful of captive lenders will reduce your money factor if you put up extra refundable security deposits at signing. Each deposit buys a fixed reduction in the rate.
BMW Financial Services is the most consistently documented programme: up to seven deposits, each equal to your monthly payment rounded up to the next $50, and each reducing the money factor by 0.00006.
The critical feature is that the deposits are refundable. You get the money back at lease end provided the vehicle is returned in good order and your payments are current. It is not a cost — it is cash tied up.
On a typical $45,000 lease, seven deposits might tie up $4,200 and save around $1,100 in rent charge — while cutting the rate from roughly 4.4% to 3.3% APR.
What to weigh
The real question is the opportunity cost of the cash. If the deposits would otherwise sit in a savings account, buying down the rate is usually the better return. If you would be borrowing to fund them, it is not.
There is also a floor. Once deposits have driven the money factor down near zero, additional ones buy nothing and simply tie up more money. It is worth checking where that point falls before maxing out.
Some states cap the total refundable deposit a lessor may hold, and that cap can bind before the programme maximum does.
The catch: nobody publishes the terms
Captive lenders do not publish deposit programmes. There is no rate sheet to check, so the figures circulating publicly come from people who have recently signed.
That information is real but perishable. BMW's per-deposit reduction was 0.00007 before 2020 and is 0.00006 now, and programmes are sometimes suspended entirely during promotions.
Treat any published figure — including ours — as a starting point to confirm with the dealer, not as a quotable rate.
Common questions
- Are multiple security deposits refundable?
- Yes. They are returned at lease end provided the vehicle is in acceptable condition and payments are current. They are a use of cash rather than an expense, which is what makes them attractive.
- Which brands allow multiple security deposits?
- BMW and MINI have the most consistently reported programmes. Several others have been reported to offer them with regional variation, and some brands do not offer them at all. Because no lender publishes terms, confirm with the dealer before counting on it.
- How much can multiple security deposits save?
- On a typical $45,000 lease with seven deposits, roughly $1,100 over a 36-month term, cutting the effective rate by more than a percentage point of APR. The saving scales with the size of the lease and the starting rate.
- Is there a point where extra deposits stop helping?
- Yes. Money factors have a floor, and once deposits have driven the rate to it, further deposits tie up cash for no benefit. Work out the useful maximum before committing.
