Ohio car lease tax
Tax is assessed once at signing on the sum of every scheduled payment plus your down payment, rather than being added to each monthly bill.
How Ohio calculates it
ORC 5739.02: for a fixed-term lease over thirty days of a vehicle rated at one ton or less, tax "shall be collected by the vendor at the time the lease or rental is consummated" and is calculated "on the basis of the total amount to be paid by the lessee". Amounts not determinable at signing (excess mileage, wear) are taxed when billed. County permissive rates stack on the 5.75% state rate.
